#ThatWasDifferent: town board gets art appreciation lesson— and a primer on social media By Denise Civiletti – May 16, 2014, 12:18 pm

Artist Kristina Howard paints colorful patterns and local seascapes on horseshoe crab shells in bright enamels. That was something board members had no trouble relating to, demonstrating, as the supervisor observed, the power of a “shiny object” over board members — who immediately saw a business opportunity for the young painter and offered suggestions on how she might expedite her painstaking and time-consuming production process and market her hand-painted shells.

“I bet these would fetch a pretty penny,” Walter told her.

A portion of the proceeds for each sale will be donated to the New York Marine Rescue Center.

The New York Marine Rescue Center is a rescue and rehabilitation organization that promotes marine conservation. They are the primary responders for sick or injured seals, sea turtles, dolphins, porpoises and small toothed whales, and maintain the only marine mammal and sea turtle rehabilitation center in New York State.

About Jack Dusty, L.I.

Besides being a lifestyle brand, we are an environmentally conscious business. A portion of all sales will go to the New York Marine Rescue Center located in Riverhead, N.Y. We all have a strong connection with the sea living on Long Island and must take care of our waters and marine life. Our custom apparel such as shirts and hats have been designed with inspiration from all creatures living within our ocean and bays. I work with many different types of mediums yet working with horseshoe crabs has been an amazing experience and I’ve learned so much about these beautiful creatures in the process. So welcome once again and I hope you’ll find something you’ll love in my artwork.
